Meet Our Team
David Sommer, MD, MPH
Movement Disorders Neurology,
Westborough
CNS is excited to announce that, in April 2026, Dr. David Sommer, a respected neurologist with over 16 years of practice experience in the central Massachusetts community, will be joining our team in Westborough.
Dr. Sommer takes a patient-centered and holistic approach to the practice of neurology. “Brain diseases can be frightening and overwhelming. I connect with each patient and the other important people in their life to aide them in understanding what is happening to them. Then, considering patient values and priorities, we explore available treatment options and make a collaborative plan.”
Dr. Sommer is a board-certified neurologist and fellowship-trained movement disorders clinician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson’s disease, tremor, dystonia, tics, dyskinesia, and other disorders of involuntary movement. He is experienced in injecting botulinum toxin for the management of cervical dystonia, limb dystonia, blepharospasm, and hemifacial spasm. He is also experienced in selecting patients for and ongoing management of deep brain stimulation therapy for Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor.
In addition to treating patients with movement disorders, Dr. Sommer sees patients with the full range of neurologic symptoms. He has also developed significant professional experience and interest in evaluating people with functional neurological disorder.
Dr. Sommer earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Rice University in Houston, Texas. He then completed medical school, an internship in internal medicine, a neurology residency, and a movement disorders fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. During his time in North Carolina, he also earned a master’s in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Sommer moved to Massachusetts in 2009 to be near extended family and has since made the Metrowest area his home. While practicing in Worcester and Westborough, he has developed a reputation among both patients and referring physicians for delivering excellent and compassionate neurologic care. The Central Massachusetts Chapter of the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association honored Dr. Sommer with the “Heart of Gold” award for neurology in 2025.
He has been part of the Parkinson’s disease community in Massachusetts, having given various lectures and has previously co-facilitated a Parkinson’s support group and directed a Parkinson’s rehabilitation program. Dr. Sommer has volunteered in various capacities with the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association since 2011.
In his time away from work, Dr. Sommer enjoys exercising, exploring the outdoors with his family, and listening to live music.
