Meet the Clinician – Jennifer Pampreen

In this week’s Community Neuroscience Services blog, we get to meet Jennifer Pampreen, FNP, one of the two amazing neurology nurse practitioners in our Westborough location.  Looking for a neurologist near you with great availability?  Our nurse practitioners and physician assistants partner with our neurologists to deliver top-notch care to patients with neurological disorders in each of our offices!

What inspired you to work in the clinical neurosciences?

I have always been interested in the way the brain works and how it can recover from trauma, both physical and psychological. My undergraduate degree was in psychology with a focus in neurobiology. During that time, I read the book “Brain on Fire”, which I found fascinating and spurred me to pursue a career in the clinical neurosciences.

What is the most rewarding aspect of working in neurology?

I love being able to help people improve their quality of life. Whether it is managing anxiety, having control of headaches, or finding better sleep, my favorite visits are the ones where patient’s tell me they are finally feeling better!

If you could have a superpower related to neurology, what would it be and why?

I wish I had a magic wand that could tell us which medications would be the most effective as the trial and error of finding the right medication, especially when dealing with depression and anxiety, can be frustrating and discouraging.

What is your favorite brain fact or trivia that you like to share with patients?

Outside of work, what are your hobbies or interests?

I love to read, cook, travel, and spend time with my family.

What is your favorite neurological disorder to study or treat, and why?

No specific disorder, but I love reviewing imaging. I always say if you have to have an MRI you might as well get to see your brain (or spine)! I enjoy walking patient’s through their imaging and pointing out the function of various structures and how the findings do or do not correlate with their symptoms.

If you could give one piece of advice to patients to promote brain health, what would it be?

The importance of a good night sleep!

What is one misconception or myth about neurology that you would like to debunk?

That we do not know everything about the brain. There is research constantly being done to expand our knowledge of the brain and body as a whole and we do not yet have all of the answers. The hardest part of neurology is not being able to provide an answer to patients on what the cause of their symptoms are. Even when this happens, we can still try and manage the symptoms and work to improve quality of life!

If you weren’t an NP, what other profession do you think you would have pursued? I absolutely love to read and in another life I would have pursued a career with books, possibly a book editor or own my own bookstore.
