Here at Community Neuroscience Services, we love to highlight the great doctors and staff that work with us every day. Today, we’re meeting Dr. Justin Donaghy. Dr. Donaghy practices in our Worcester location, seeing patients and performing EMG tests.
Dr. Donaghy, what inspired you to become a neurologist?
During medical school I had a rotation with a local neurologist. I fell in love with the discipline and level of variety and patient care. After that my mind was made up and I never looked back.
What is the most rewarding aspect of being a neurologist?
Putting the pieces together. A lot of what we do is taking a careful history, asking extensive questions, and doing a thorough physical exam. All of this is to gather “clues” to help solve the puzzle which is very exciting.
If you could have a superpower related to neurology, what would it be and why?
Extreme powers of observation like Sherlock Holmes.
What is your favorite brain fact or trivia that you like to share with patients?
I love neuroanatomy so I’m happy to discuss any aspect of it with anyone who will listen.
Outside of work, what are your hobbies or interests?
Reading, board games, attending horse shows (my kids all ride horses)
What is your favorite neurological disorder to study or treat, and why?
Epilepsy and seizures. I enjoy the close follow up and relationships built with patients and families. Also some seizure symptoms are absolutely fascinating.
If you could give one piece of advice to patients to promote brain health, what would it be?
Stop smoking.
What is one misconception or myth about neurology that you would like to debunk?
That neurology and neurologic disease is depressing and untreatable. Most neurologic conditions are treatable and manageable. MS is no longer a guarantee of a wheelchair and people with epilepsy can live very normal lives.
If you weren’t a doctor, what other profession do you think you would have pursued?
I used to play drums in a few rock bands… Who doesn’t want to be a rock star?
